International Space Station Seends land in Fir Tree

On 2nd September 2015, 2 kilograms of Rocket Seeds travelled from Earth to the International Space Station(ISS). The seeds were stored in microgravity by Tim Peak (the first British ESA astronaut). In February the seeds returned to Earth after 6 Months. During that time they have been around the earth 16 times per day and kept in constant microgravity, pressure and temperature.
Together with the Royal Horticultural Society and 8,300 schools, a month long experiment is now going to take place. Each school (Fir Tree included), has 100 rocket seeds that have been to space and 100 rocket seeds that have stayed on earth, in unmarked envelopes so we don’t know which is which.. Our experiment is to see whether the seeds from the ISS will grow any differently from those that have stayed on earth.
Thank You Sainsburys!

A BIG thank you to Sainsbury’s for the Mog story books that were so kindly given to Fir Tree School. The children grew very fond of Mog over the Christmas period because of Sainsbury’s fantastic advert and I know that the books will be really popular with all classes.
We plan to put some in classes as reading corner books, use some in the Early Years for the adults to read to the children and some to use as group reading books.

Here are some photos of the children enjoying the books.

Science Week

In the week beginning the 12th October 2015, Fir Tree came off timetable for and exciting Science week. The theme of the week was Inventions and Discoveries and the focus was on carrying out lots of practical Science. The week really sparked the children’s imagination and got them excited about the practical nature of Science. It also helped them realise the application and relevance of Science in everyday life!

During the week, the children visited other classrooms to carry out a range of experiments such as: making their own lemonade, investigating the melting points of different chocolates, and exploring the chemical reaction created when sodium bicarbonate and acid are mixed together.

Each class also studied a famous Scientist or inventor and then carried out investigations into a related area of Science. For example, Year 5 studied Sir Isaac Newton and forces and Year 1 learned about Sir David Attenborough and habitats.

The week was brought to an impressive end on Friday, when we held our first Science Fair at Fir Tree. Each class produced a project to present at the fair, which was judged by the Head of Science at Trinity. She was blown away by how hard everyone had worked and the high standard of the projects produced by each year group. The prize for the winning class was to visit Trinity for a special Science lesson in a real Science lab! Congratulations to Year 4, who won the Science Fair with their project about sugar and dental health!

Kindness Day

On Friday the 13th, as well as dressing up for Children in Need, we celebrated National Kindness Day. Each class took part in a variety of activities linked to kindness and thought of lots of ways they could be kind in school and the wider community. Year 1 made special flowers for each other, Year 5 took part in a tower building exercise in groups and Year 6 had to pick a name of a classmate from a hat and secretly do kind things for them all day. Every class joined in and it was a great day.

Creative Week

During the week commencing 31st November Fir Tree School came off time table to participate in a Creative week. This was an opportunity for teachers to get to know another side to their class. Who would be the best painter or singer? Who could play a musical instrument, do a Karate chop or perform the best cheerleading move?

Each class was set the challenge of studying an art movement and producing and piece of art work based on this movement. For example, Year 1 studied Pointillism and created an underwater scene using finger painting and Year 4 created portraits and clay models based on Surrealism. On top of this each class has to choose a song and produce a music video. I know many of the staff were impressed by their classes dance moves!

The week ended with a judging session by Mrs Wilson, head of Trinity, and some A Level Trinity students with a music video and art show. Mrs Wilson and her students were blown away by the creativity and talent shown by the Fir Tree students.

Congratulations to Year 5 whose work on Cubism and ‘Shake it off’ music video won the show. I hope you enjoy working with Mrs Hyde and I to make a creative whole school display.

Whatever the Weather - Science Week October 2016

This year’s science week was based around the topic of ‘weather’. Each class changed around in a carousel on Monday and Tuesday so that they could take part on different weather-themed activities. With Mrs Hyde, we studied air pressure; with Mr Osmond we looked at static electricity; and with Miss Bancroft we conducted an experiment on acid rain.
Each year made a weather station outside their classroom so that they could observe and record the weather over the week. In year 6 we wrote and filmed our very own weather forecast!

Y2 Communication Week

Year 2 have been learning the story of 'The Catch' which features a boy from a jungle tribe trying to catch fish to feed his family. He comes across a trapped fox and the boy helps him get free. The fox steals his catch and runs away but leads the boy to a lake with plenty of fish for the whole tribe. It turns out the fox is a spirit who helped the boy for helping him.

We had a drama session, acting out scenes from the story using body language and movement.

We used different art styles to create fish - salt painting, Japanese koinobori, Maori style art and collage/finger printing. We also made our own fishing rods.

We discussed how we get food and how other cultures have to get their food. We tried tortillas and mangoes too!
